Day One - Durban to Gonubie. Friday 3rd May 2013

We left Durban at 4.30am, a clear morning, dark with plenty of stars. The sun came up as we passed Port Shepstone and the sea was calm and beautiful. We stopped in Kokstad around 8 for breakfast. After that we set off for Matatiele, Maclear, Ugie, Elliot and lunch around 2 in Queenstown. The scenery en route was pastoral and peaceful and the small towns busy but clean and fairly well cared for. Unfortunately we got stuck behind a logging truck going down the McKay's Nek Pass and missed a lot of the views. After leaving Queenstown we headed for the coast and our overnight stop in Gonubie. The mist and rain hit us at Cathcart and rush-hour traffic outside Gonubie ended what had been a long but spectacular first day. 13 hours on and off the bike passed quickly and we were warmly greeted by Bruce's aunt Nancy with a roast dinner, warm showers and comfy beds.
